An easy bet for Liverpool fans. You should be betting on United to lift the trophy and spending the money on a good night out if they win, or revelling in their misery if they lose. Either way, it will be money well spent.
For Manchester United, this has been a season of turgid, defensive football that has left them needing to win the Europa League Cup outright to qualify for Champions League football via the backdoor. Simply put, they have not come close to finding a manager who comes close to being the equal of Sir Alex Ferguson and they are still paying for the folly of giving “The Chosen One” a six-year contract.
No wonder David Moyes can resign from Sunderland and not request a financial compensation package.
There will be very tight security around the game after last nights atrocities in Manchester left 22 killed in a suicide attack, and the kick off could well be delayed. The game will be shown free on BT Sports Showcase.
This is the fifth time that Manchester United have faced Ajax in European competition and they will have to play better than most of their recent games if they are going to win. I don't see why United are favourites because Ajax has much better squad depth and young talent to come from the benches. Also, Ajax hasn't played since 14th May, so they will be well rested.
By contrast, United limp into this game with a host of injuries and suspensions including their top scorer and talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic who has a cruciate ligament injury. Rojo and Bailly are also absentees for this game.
Ajax to win are an excellent 17/5 across the board so if you don't mind losing your money AND United winning at the same time then that's the bet to make.
For Liverpool fans though you have to be betting on United lifting the trophy to soften the blow if they manage it.
